No one is ever prepared, totally. Some have a sense of what is involved and they navigate fairly well, hoping not to make a mistake that would result in a catastrophic event that would land them in jail, make them the lead-in story on the nightly news or cause a death (to themselves or their loved one.) Lol!
But seriously, the role has no true job description or training, other than — jump in and do your best. But with the responsible of caring for someone’s life, much care should be given by providing you with someone who could sit down with you, give you step by step guidance on the day to day “how to’s” of caregiving, and provide you with hands on training in caring for your loved one’s specific needs. Well, it doesn’t happen that way and many caregivers struggle, become overwhelmed, and feel defeated!
There are so many unknowns, so many questions:
How do I keep my loved ones safe in their home as long as possible? How do I reduce falls?
How do I know they are taking their medications correctly?
What do I need to go over and assist with? How often?
When do I consider adding in an in-home sitter/helper? What are the equipment needs?
Is it wise to move them in with me and my family? What can they do for themselves?
How do I get them in and out the bed without hurting myself? Is my home safe for them?
Do I get up in the middle of the night to help them?
AND the questions go on and on . . .
But guess what? Finding A Foothold wants to help! Start by calling into the podcast and ask a question. It’s season 2 and we are again taking you calls.
